AWANAKANCHA HISTORY

15 years of intense travelling all over Peru are not enough to know it all. Nevertheless for the 3 brothers that create this beautiful Exhibition Centre of Textiles and South American Camels, now called Awana Kancha (Quechua name that means “The Palace of the Weaver”), has been enough to value the enormous richness of Peru.

That is why we present to the world a synthesis of those experiences with the eagerness to share them in what we could call the first LIVING MUSEUM OF THE PERUVIAN ANDE.

Around 1989 we started individually our passages from north to south, east to west, coast, mountains and jungle using the deteriorated roads.

In 1997 with the creation of our CIA of rent of 4x4 vehicles we had the chance to start more serious journeys giving our service to tourists, scientists, business men, engineers, journalists and others that helped us to increase our knowledge of flora and fauna, folklore, natural landscapes, modernization, poverty and richness of the Peruvian people.

We learnt to value our culture thanks to the astonish and explanation of the experts, because of most of the time human beings don’t value what we see everyday.

Of course a big part of these experiences had been shaped in photographs, but over all and the 100% of them are in our minds and hearts. (e mail us for more information about non traditional places).

With all these information we get to the conclusion that the south American camels are an inexhaustible and valuable source to Peru and the world. Appreciate their beauty in their natural habitat is difficult for most tourists.

We thought that en exhibition of the south American camels should be in a place that keep the atmospheric and climatologic conditions, altitude, flora, right location y finally accessible for our tourists.

After buying the land, we made a general cleaning and found an agricultural anden of the imperial inka and natural springs; also the few deteriorated constructions with metallic roofs were eliminated and replaced with materials of the region and the support of our people.

Now with a lot of pride we present AWANA KANCHA, a place where you can appreciate the beauty of the Peruvian Ande with its south American camels and derivatives gotten thanks to the majestic, traditional and modern technique (dyeing, spinning, weaving process) including used materials and live weaving by the people of the Peruvian ande. Finally you will be able to buy traditional and industrial textiles of high quality.

This project has been possible thanks the support of the Consejo Nacional de Camelidos Sudamericanos CONACS.

For you and of all heart.
